John G. Hunter, MD, FACS John G. Hunter was born and grew up in Hanover, New Hampshire. His father was a neurologist and the dean (briefly) of the Dartmouth Medical School. He attended Harvard College and the University of Pennsylvania Medical School. He completed his surgical residency at the University of Utah Medical Center, where he worked in the Laser Institute with Dr. John Dixon studying tissue effects of a wide variety of lasers. Following his surgical residency, Dr. Hunter completed clinical fellowships in flexible endoscopy at the Massachusetts General Hospital and in pancreatobiliary endoscopy at the University of Western Ontario. He then joined the faculty in Utah as a gastrointestinal surgeon and the director of surgical endoscopy. His clinical interests include the management of diseases of the esophagus and stomach, and laparoscopic biliary surgery. In the early 1990s Dr. Hunter pioneered the development of laparoscopic gastrointestinal surgery in the intermountain west and trained several hundred surgeons to perform laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Dr. Hunter spent nine years at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta (1992–2001), where he was Professor of Surgery, Clinical Vice Chairman of the Department of Surgery, Chief, Division of Gastrointestinal Surgery, Director of the Emory Swallowing Center, and Director of the Emory Endosurgical Center. He served in 1998 as the president of the Society of American Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES). Currently he is a trustee of the Society for Surgery of the Alimentary Tract and serves on 10 editorial boards. His research activities concentrate on Barrett’s esophagus and on improvements in the techniques of minimally invasive surgery. Dr. Hunter speaks and writes widely on these topics in professional journals and books, at surgical society meetings, postgraduate courses, and other national and international gatherings of surgeons. On May 1, 2001 Dr. Hunter was appointed Professor and Chairman of the Department of Surgery at Oregon Health & Science University in Portland, Oregon.
